Be An Early Childhood Educator in Canada

Early Childhood Education with Co-op

This 69-week certificate program is designed for those who wish to qualify as early childhood educators in daycare or preschool centers. The curriculum includes experiential lectures and workshops facilitated by specialized industry experts and work experience practicums at various childcare facilities throughout the lower mainland.

The successful completion of 16 courses (including 8 weeks of practicum time) is required for licensing by the Community Care Facilities Branch. A student who graduates with a certificate and successfully completes 500 hours of work experience under a licensed Early Childhood Educator will be eligible for registration with the Early Childhood Educator Registry, Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Graduates will be awarded an ECE Certificate upon successful program completion, and will also receive Emergency Child Care First Aid, WHMIS, FoodSafe Level One, Personal and Professional Development Skills, and Appetite to Play Certificates. Furthermore, upon completion of the first four courses (PRO100, ECE100, ECE105, and ECE205), students will be qualified to apply through the Early Childhood Educator Registry for an ECE Assistant License to Practice.

1. Some of the job responsibilities and typical duties of an Early Childhood Educator:
• supporting learning by providing engaging activities and materials for children; stimulating and assisting in the
integral development of children’s skills.
• designing and implementing classroom activities and lessons
• are responsible for the overall health and welfare of the children, which requires diligent monitoring of all
children during learning times, meal times, restroom breaks, and nap times
• observing, monitoring, and tracking each child’s individual progress and development to make sure they work
successfully towards achieving pre-established learning and behavioral goals
• maintaining a caring, inclusive, safe, and hygienic environment.
• developing schedules and routines, etc.

2. Individuals with the following skills and abilities are successful in this line of work if they:
• find it rewarding to help children learn and grow
• are looking for a career offering stability and good working conditions
• have an interest in helping others, are patient and compassionate
• are flexible and adaptable

 

3. The typical range of wages in this field is from $17-$22 per hour.

 

Program Duration: 69 weeks

Academic coursework is delivered on average in a 20 or 25 hr/week format (4 or 5 hrs/day + homework)
* The Personal & Professional Development Skills Workshops will be delivered fully online using Moodle as the Online Learning Platform.

** Career Search Strategies is offered in a combined online and classroom delivery format.
Practice Education: The Practice Education component of the program will occur within the Student Enrollment Contract Dates

Hours: Practicum: Students will participate in 2 separate Consolidated Practicum Experiences (CPE) – minimum 249 hours (8 weeks full-time) in total Cooperative Work Experience: Students will participate in a Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) over a 23 week period – 690 hours.
